Many of us are used to sending fleece samples for fibre testing. Genetic focused fibre testing takes things a step further by looking at the genetic influences on fibre traits. The idea is to separate out variation caused by environment (such as nutrition) from the variation that is inherited, giving breeders a clearer picture of their alpacas’ true genetic potential for fleece quality.
Paul explained to us the principles behind genetic focused testing, the validation trials that they have been running, and give us an insight on the benchmark data gathered from over 2,000 tests.
