Alpacas and llamas are generally gentle animals, but as every owner knows, challenges can arise, especially when dealing with aggression or difficult behaviour. To help members navigate this important topic, SEAG hosted an insightful webinar with Marty McGee Bennett, founder of Camelidynamics and one of the world’s leading experts on camelid behaviour and handling.
Marty has spent decades teaching owners how to work with their animals using respect, observation, and proven handling techniques. In this session, she explained why aggressive behaviours develop in camelids, how to recognise early warning signs, and most importantly, what owners can do to manage and prevent problems.
Key Takeaways from the Session
- Understanding triggers: Aggression is rarely “out of the blue”, Marty discussed the environmental, social, and management factors that can cause it.
- Reading body language: Subtle cues in ears, posture, and movement can give you vital information before behaviour escalates.
- Practical handling strategies: Techniques to reduce confrontation and build trust, rather than reinforcing negative behaviours.
- Prevention over correction: Why consistent, respectful handling is the best long-term solution.
Members who attended the live event came away with a deeper understanding of their animals and practical tools to apply on their farms.
Thanks again to Marty for her generosity and sharing her time and talent.
