Ever wondered what to do with your leftover alpaca fleece? Kath Shearer’s recent SEAG webinar offered a wonderfully creative solution: turn it into felted soap! This interactive online event brought together alpaca enthusiasts keen to explore a fun and practical use for their fibre—and the result was a session full of useful tips, laughs, and suds.
Kath guided participants through the entire process of creating beautiful felted soap bars using alpaca fleece, sharing tricks she’s picked up over the years. With just some carded fleece, a bar of soap, warm water, and a bit of bubble wrap or netting, you can create your own naturally exfoliating, long-lasting felted soap at home. It’s a fantastic way to use even short or otherwise ‘scrappy’ bits of fleece that might not suit spinning or felting.
Participants saw how to lay out fleece evenly, wrap the soap, and work it by hand until it felts snugly around the bar. Kath also showed off some finished examples—multi-coloured, textured, and all proudly made with fleece from her own alpacas.
“You don’t need much fleece at all, it’s a great project for using up leftovers, and it makes a perfect gift or farm shop product.” Kath Shearer
