SUMMARY:An Evening with Dr Lindsay Heasman: The VESBA (Vaccinating East Sussex Badgers) Project and biosecurity steps we can all take to protect herds from TB risks
DESCRIPTION:SEAG are hosting a webinar on 23 April at 8 pm with Dr Lindsay Heasman\, director of Hurst Animal Health Ltd on vaccinating badgers as a tool that can reduce the risk of bovine TB from wildlife sources. \nDr Lindsay Heasman is Director of Hurst Animal Health Ltd\, a company that provides independent research and consultancy services to the livestock sector\, in particular regarding bovine TB. Lindsay is Project Manager for both the large-scale badger vaccination programme in East Sussex that commenced in 2021\, and the recently announced Badger Vaccination Field Force. Lindsay has previously been involved in delivering the TB Advisory Service and in the cattle vaccination field trials. Her passion for eradicating bovine TB is clear\, and Lindsay is an active member of the TB Partnership\, a stakeholder group that contributes to setting strategic direction for the government’s bTB eradication programme\, co-designing new policies and communications. \nThe success of this trial project area has led to approval for the rolling out of this programme more widely. This year (2026) areas of Shropshire\, Worcestershire and Oxfordshire will be vaccinated as part of the new Badger Vaccination Field Force project\, whilst the successful VESBA project in East Sussex will continue for a sixth year. \nKeeping our alpacas safe from TB by various biosecurity measures which we can all take\, is a first step. \nLindsay will talk about: \nHow the VESBA project came about.\nWhat the programme and its history is.\nWhat it involves.\nBiosecurity measures we can all take.\nHow the programme can help us too\, both individually and at a Society Level.\nOptions for getting involved. \nThis event will be Free for current SEAG members\, non-members £5.

SUMMARY:Through the Lens with Robert Els - Wildlife Photographer
DESCRIPTION:An inspiring evening with photographer and wildlife documentarist Robert Els (a South African living in Arequipa\, Peru)\, who will share stories and footage from his work in the Andes and with the Quechua Benefit charity.   Robert fell in love with the magic of Peru and has made it his home for the past 17 years\, he has very kindly offered to share his knowledge and experience of being surrounded by Alpaca\, Guanaco and Vicuña in their native habitat.  Robert will also share insight to a recent documentary he has been involved with\, reporting on how Gold Mining has changed the bio-diversity in the region and how this has affected camelids.

SUMMARY:Genetic Focused Fibre Testing with Paul Vallely and Harley Laver from Art of Fibre
DESCRIPTION:On the 15th October 2025\, SEAG is delighted to be hosting a webinar on Genetic Focused Fibre Testing. \nMany of us are used to sending fleece samples for fibre testing. Genetic focused fibre testing takes things a step further by looking at the genetic influences on fibre traits. The idea is to separate out variation caused by environment (such as nutrition) from the variation that is inherited\, giving breeders a clearer picture of their alpacas’ true genetic potential for fleece quality. \nPaul will explain to us the principles behind genetic focused testing\, the validation trials that they have been running\, and give us an insight on the benchmark data gathered from over 2\,000 tests. Harley will outline how the testing process works in practice. \nAs an added bonus for attendees\, Art of Fibre have kindly offered a discount voucher to use\, offering 20 genetic focused fibre tests at the standard test price\, saving £10. \nThis will be a great opportunity to hear directly from the people behind this innovative approach to fibre testing\, and to hear about how it might help with herd planning and fleece improvement. \nAs always\, there will be plenty of time for Q&A. \nCost: Free for SEAG members\, £5 for non-members.

SUMMARY:Aggression in Camelids with Marty McGee Bennett of CAMELIDynamics
DESCRIPTION:SEAG are delighted to present this online webinar with Marty McGee Bennett the creator of CAMELIDynamics focusing in particular\, on techniques surrounding bottle feeding. \nMarty developed CAMELIDynamics and has been teaching people about llamas and alpacas for over 40 years.  Marty has fielded questions about llamas and alpacas and dangerous behavior for almost that long. Marty gets thousands of questions about llamas and alpacas displaying dangerous behavior. \nMarty has served as an expert witness in a lawsuit arising from injuries caused by a llama who seriously injured an older gentleman. Marty has raised both llamas and alpacas and visited hundreds of farms around the world and has an undergraduate degree from ages ago in animal behavior and has been intensively studying the science of behavior for the last 15+ years with Dr. Susan Friedman and others. \n \nMarty says… \n“While I am going to refer mostly to males in this talk… AND the problem of dangerous behaviors directed at humans occurs at a much higher rate with males than females but I have certainly talked to many owners whose females exhibited similar behaviors.” \nDon’t miss this fabulous opportunity to learn from the creator of CAMELIDynamics.

SUMMARY:All about fibre (in-person 1 day workshop)
DESCRIPTION:Your alpacas will soon be happily grazing the fields again\, meanwhile their fibre ends up bagged and waiting and often stored until next shearing season. \nSo… what can you do with all that fibre?  Turns out\, a lot!  From improving your herd to creating beautiful products\, there is so much potential wrapped up in those fleeces. \nThe SEAG committee have enlisted a UK BAS Judge\, so we’re delighted that Jo Bridge (from Hilly Ridge Alpacas) has agreed to run a friendly and informal one-day hands-on practical course for us\, that will dive into everything related to fibre. \nJoin us from 10.30am to 4.30pm\, on Saturday 5th July 2025\, at the Church Hall next to St John the Baptist Church in the Surrey Hills (roughly 20 minutes from the M25). It’s a non-profit making event\, at just £20 for members and £30 for non-members. Bring a couple of your fleeces along if you like for judges assessment and apply your knowledge as you go! \nThe “All about Fibre” course includes: \n\nUnderstanding fibre quality – what is density/fineness and uniformity\, and what does the Judge or the Mill look for\nSkirting your fleece properly\nUsing fibre data to guide breeding\nPreparing for shows (fleece and halter)\nSampling and why it matters\nCreative and commercial uses\nIncreasing Alpaca sales with accurate fibre descriptions\nUnderstand what you are looking for when purchasing or selling Alpacas\n\nYou will get a mix of classroom learning and hands on experience\, perfect whether you are new to Alpacas or want to learn more. \nJoin us to explore everything your Alpaca fibre can become! We really do need a minimum of 10 participants to go ahead to cover costs. We’re expecting this event will be popular\, so if you’re thinking of coming\, we’d be grateful if you could sign up as soon as possible to secure your place and to help us plan.
